Wamsley Cup - 2020 KSC East
03 Jul 2020Very good weather today with a gentle breeze albeit with a sprinkling of rain during the round. Since the border has not yet opened, a lot of members cannot play golf at their home courses, so when the application for this event was launched it was fully subscribed within 3 hours. Sorry for those who are on the waiting list. It is very tough to get tee times at present.
The first to tee off were Frankie Fang, Mark Chow, Kelvin Tse and me. Kelvin told me he hasn’t play since the outbreak of Covid-19, so this is the first round of golf for over 5 months. Other than not been able to hit the driver, Kelvin’s short game and precision iron play helped him to shoot a pretty good round. On hole17, Kelvin was 70 yards short of the pin. With a wedge in hand, he hit the flag but the ball stayed 2 feet next to the hole. Another way to save par after a poor drive. Meanwhile Frankie played a series of exceptional irons hitting all the par 3’s off the tee. The toughest par 3 was on hole 8 with a head wind and a 200 yard carry to hit the middle of the green. Frankie pulled out his hybrid and the ball just land 5 yards left of the flag which gave him “closest to the pin”.
In the second flight, Don Roberts had a wonderful sand save on hole 18. Don hit his third shot short to arrive in the green side bunker. With his 60 degree wedge, he hit the flag stick and was able to tap in for a par.
Meanwhile in third flight, Andrew Wood and Justin Faulkner went head to head at the top of the leaderboard. Woody had a mediocre front nine with 8 over, but came back 3 over for 35 stableford points to claim the victory. For Justin, he shot 85 with 33 stableford points to acheive second place.
